Do you want to have your gums and teeth healed but don’t want to spend thousands of dollars to do it? Do you look at the labels of toothpaste and wonder- “What is that?” You are not alone!
As you may know, not all toothpaste is built the same. You go to the store and you look at the labels and what do you see? Hydrated silica, glycerin, PEG-12, Blue-1 and Yellow-10 are just a few of the ingredients. What if I told you there was an easier, healthier and more cost effective way to clean your teeth?
The Magical 3
The following three items are all you will need to help give yourself and your family that bright, white and super clean smile that you have been longing for. When I originally started researching items to replace my everyday toothpaste I was surprised to see that these items were in most homes already. Baking Soda, Coconut Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil. Once diving in to the world of the internet I could see how beneficial all of these items were for tooth and gum health.
Baking Soda is the powerhouse, it not only prevents tooth decay, but it also can help remineralize your tooth enamel, help prevent/minimize plaque buildup, and is a natural tooth whitener. Baking Soda is mildly abrasive which helps to remove those pesky stains from your teeth and also helps to balance out the PH levels in the mouth.
Coconut Oil helps to clean and whiten teeth. It is known to help reduce halitosis (bad breathe) and can aid in gum restoration. It can also remove harmful mouth bacteria that causes decay and gum disease.
Peppermint Oil is known for its powerful aroma but it also is one of the best things to help with tooth pain. Peppermint oil is an anti-inflammatory and is also the most effective oil for killing the bacteria that causes gum disease.
In my research I was surprised and excited. I had previously been diagnosed with gingivitis and was told to get an electric toothbrush and to come in more often for cleanings due to my plaque build up and receipting gums. I did purchase an electric toothbrush but I decided to go the natural root and I made my own toothpaste. I will tell you now- I will NEVER go back to store bought toothpaste.
Since using my homemade toothpaste for the last year I have had the following results:
- My sensitivity has decreased an exponential amount.
- My teeth are whiter then they have ever been in my life- I am an avid coffee drinker.
- My gingivitis is GONE and my gums have never been healthier.
- I never get the nasty film on my teeth that I would get from store bought toothpaste.
- I rarely have bad breath – yes, I even asked my husband.
My results were beyond anything I could have ever imagined for myself and I have never been so adamant and passionate about making my own toothpaste. I tell everyone I can – make your own! It is so much cheaper but not only that it is so great for your tooth and gum health.
The Recipes
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp Baking Soda
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
20-50 Peppermint Drops (depending on batch size)
I like to make a batch for 2 months at a time. I will do 3 Tbsp of each with about 30 drops of Peppermint Oil. You will want less drops of oil if you are making this for kids.
The Process
Step 1:
Measure out your coconut oil- I like to have mine a room temperature or a little warmer so that it will be easy to mix.
Step 2:
Mix in the baking soda and stir until everything is completely blended.
Step 3:
Add in your peppermint oil drops. You can use more or less then the recommended amount above- it is based on your personal preference.
Step 4:
Once everything is mixed I put it into a container with a lid and keep it on my counter in the bathroom. Use a small spoon to scoop out your toothpaste and put it onto your brush. You can dip your toothbrush into the mix, but that can contaminate your toothpaste with bacteria.
Step 5:
Brush your teeth!
It is that simple!
Where the Savings Happen- Cost Breakdown:
* 84 fl oz Organic Virgin Coconut Oil from Costco- $17.99
* 13.5 lbs Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda from Costco- $9.99
* 100ml Organic Peppermint Essential Oil from Plant Therapy – $26.99
Total Estimated Cost: $55.00
HOLD THE PANIC- yes this sounds like a lot, but let me break it down even further for you!
Conversion per item:
100ml = an average of 1,800 drops
13.5 lbs = 739.5 Tbsp
84 fl oz = 168 Tbsp
For about $55.00, I can make my recipe of 3 Tbsp of baking soda and coconut oil with 30 drops of peppermint oil at least 56 times. Say if this batch only lasts you 1 month each time you make it, that is still 56 months or 4 and a half YEARS worth of toothpaste.
Of course this is on a large scale! I personally like to buy in bulk to make my money work as hard for me as I work for my money. Not having to worry about buying toothpaste for over 4 years is a breath of fresh air and also kind to my pocket book. Be sure to give this easy recipe a try the next time you are wanting that fresh and clean dentist feeling. Your teeth and your wallet will thank you!
Cheers!
